Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry
The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
Australia's chief selector Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.
"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
