Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer laws, risking fines, prosecution or prison.

Service Moderation and Security Actions

A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it actively monitored dangerous material on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“People are administering substances they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online products may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in demand to current price rises for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are highly dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has already seen individuals injured by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may expose patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
